Becoming a Certified Master Gardener requires the completion of:

* 96 hours of formal classroom training.

* 60 hours of supervised in-service training.

* Successful completion of a written, open book exam before the in-service hours begin.

* Tree/shrub/vine identification project.

* Attendance at at least one summer diagnostic session.

* Final, practicum exam in October.

* 30 hours approved outreach educationi or community project.

Students enrolled in this program receive training in botany, plant pathology, soils, entomology, pesticide safety, integrated pest management (IPM), woody ornamentals, herbaceous ornamentals, vegetables, tree and small fruits, turf grass, invasive plants, water quality, environmental factors effecting plant growth, and diagnostic techniques.

Classes are held from 9:00am-4:00pm, one full day per week from January to April. Class days and locations vary by year and are listed at right. The charge for the program is $375.00, and scholarships may be available based on financial need. Enrollment is limited and competitive. Applications can be downloaded using the link below or by going to the UConn Home and Garden Center website. The deadline for submission is October 31, 2007.
