With the help of CMGA outreach funds, Master Gardeners and Advanced Master Gardeners have been hard at work installing and maintaning these new gardens on the grounds of the Goodwin Forest and Conservation Center, which abuts the 1,200-acre Natchaug Forest.. This project, designed to promote the widespread use of native plants, is just one of the many attractions at the Goodwin Forest, which offers horse and hiking trails and self-guided forestry tours. Mary-Jo Torcello, Master Gardener and project coordinator, have joined forces with members of the Asylym Hill Congregational Church and the Asylum Hills Boys and Girls Club to create 20 garden beds in a once vacant lot. Ten beds were planted with vegetables for the Boys and Girls Club to harvest and community residents filled the remainder.

An open field at the Corbin Heights housing project is now home to ten garden beds installed by Master Gardeners interns from Hartford County. While eight of the beds were adopted by local residents, two were reserved for youth in the community and planted with tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, beans, squash, and herbs. By mid-summer, residents had pretty much taken over maintenance of the gardens. Ten more beds are planned for next year. Read more in The Laurel - Nov 07.
